Rebuilding, Re-engineering the Philippines Resorts paradigm

You are excited. You are going to a world class resort in Mindanao or Visayas. You get on a plane, boat, or take the land routes available now. You have advanced checking in or at the site, you get a room. You are travelling with a group or travelling alone. You have a really good time, often mulling about not taking any calls from the outside world to re-energize yourself. Hmmm… woow… its a pleasure to be away from all the cares and problems. Specially if you’re with your bff. Great! Then you complete your vacation, sign out of the hotel and don’t even bother to take a shower after dipping in the wonderful beach, not minding the green weeds and algae there, because the water is pristine clear. Of course you think its clean, you even didn’t mind swallowing a small bit of it. When you’re in the plane or an enclosed space once more on the trip back to where you came, you smell like shit, everyone who didn’t shower after packing their things and rushing to the transport to get back to where they came from smell terrifically shitty. Their Estee Lauder, Chanel, Hugo, or other strong perfumes cannot mask the stink. Think backwards and imagine a structure of the beach, the resorts and the hotels at the beachfront. What is the paradigm that comes to your mind?

My mom and dad used to say, for n number of years since we frequented Boracay in 1995, then Siargao in 1997, we had the same experience all over and over, when you put your behind on the seat of the transport that will take you home, you smell very unpleasant. Or if you showered, those beside you smell like manure. There is a need re-engineer the design and build paradigm of Philippine resorts. The most important factor is waste water management, septage management.

In the newly emerging surfing capital of the country, the experience of Visayas and Mindanao resorts had to be rethinked. We tried to advocate cleaner resort concept through proper management of sewage and water systems, so the concept is slowly building up. Boracay is slowly being retrofitted. So there is need to encourage the entire town of Baler to rally to the concept of building a waste water management, septage management facility for the whole population as well as take charge of the effluents coming from the upper regions from where the rivers of Baler receive streams of wastes and toxins, microorganisms and chemicals produced by other enclaves external Baler’s population.

White Wave Resorts proposes to the Baler and Aurora people to build the waste water treatment and septage management facility as long as in the long run, even in very, very small trickles, the resort will receive a return on its investment. If the people of Baler agree to this, it will be to the benefit of the town and its beautiful, wonderful tourists that will bring enormous livelihood opportunities for the locality. Plus, all the waste water that can be treated from the facility will be usable once more.

When anyone rides the enclosed bus, car, or helicopter, other form of transport back home from surfing in the White Waves of Sabang Beach and other surfing places in the vicinity, at least one will not smell or be able to smell from others, the unmistakable scent of shit.
